Civil War Commemorative Events


Members of the South Sebastian County Historical Society are attending The Civil War in Arkansas, Voices in the Dust third annual Fort Smith history conference. Site visits to Van Buren's historic Fariview Cemetery and Drennen-Scott house were conducted today. Tomorrow promises a day of scholarly presentations by historians and professors on the campus of the University of Arkansas, Fort Smith. The event is open to the public. At the Museum we are busy clearing out last year's displays and preparing our interpretation of the Civil War in South Sebastian County for our May opening. We are excited to bring you the stories of area families during that time of great historical significance.

Williams Family Makes Donation

The Historical Society is pleased to announced the recent donation of a horse collar and harness on a unique hand crafted display stand by the family of the late James and Jewel Williams of Greenwood. Pictured here are Williams's granddaughter,Lisa Williams Stevens,and great grandson,Chester Stevens, with the harness and traces and at the Ole Barn at the Old Jail Museum Complex, where the item will be displayed.














This video demonstrates how a horse harness was used with draft horses or mules for plowing or hauling heavy loads.

A New Year, A New Flag


Our Arkansas flag was looking pretty faded and weather worn. SSCHS member Rich McKinney provided the Old Jail Museum with a bright new flag today. It's flying proudly. Thanks, Rich!

Reminder: First meeting of 2011 is January 17, 7 PM at the VFW on the square. Our annual beans and cornbread supper is serve at 6:30 to members and visitors. Please join us.

Join the South Sebastian County Historical Society at its first meeting of the new year, Monday, January 17 at 7:00 PM at the VFW on the Square in Greenwood. Newly elected officers will review plans for the year. Arrive at 6:30 for the annual bean feed.
