"Airing of the Quilts" in Greenwood May 11-12

Ladies in pioneer days brought their beloved quilts across the country in covered wagons and lovingly cared for them as treasured possessions.  Each spring, the ladies would “air” their quilts in the sunshine following long winter days and lots of usage.

The practice of airing the quilts continues with the Airing of the Quilts Quilt Show to be held Saturday, May 11th from 9-5 and Sunday, May 12 from 12-4 at the historic Old Rock Gym in Greenwood, AR.  The quilt show is sponsored by the Alpha Delta Chapter of ESA with proceeds benefiting the South Sebastian County Historical Society.

The “Airing of the Quilts” hopes to:
Increase the public’s awareness and appreciation of the art of quilting
Increase the interest and support of the South Sebastian County Historical Society
Provide an encouraging environment for quilters to showcase and share their creative endeavors

Entry forms are available at Hancock Fabrics in Fort Smith and at The Ware House, Chamber of Commerce and Town Square Antiques in Greenwood.

Tickets are available from ESA and South Sebastian County Historical Society members, at the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, the Ware House, and Town Square Antiques in Greenwood. Tickets are also available at the door. The Old Rock Gym is located at the intersection of Main and Gary Streets in Greenwood.

If you have questions regarding the show, contact Joyce Cormack at 479-996-4474 or Martha Beshears at 479-996-2540.

In conjunction with the beautiful display of quilts at the gym, the Old Jail Museum on the Square in Greenwood will display vintage quilts among the museum’s artifacts, in the 1848 Vineyard Log Cabin, in the Redwine Pioneer School and the Ole Barn during the Quilt Show. The curator has arranged a special exhibit of vintage hats to complement the quilts.
