Finding Surprises

The preschoolers from First Baptist Church were happy to see the sun come out today so they could enjoy their Easter egg hunt in the grass around the Vineyard Log Cabin. Where's a camera when you need one?!

Colorful eggs weren't the only surprise. Our Key Magazines have finally been received from the printer (well, the first 150). Some are being hand delivered; others were mailed today. We're awaiting delivery of the remaining issues and hope to have them in your hands soon.

If you'd like to purchase this (or earlier) issues of the Key , please stop by the Old Jail Museum during regular hours of operation. Issues through 2005 are $5.00. Issues 2006-Present are $10. We're open May 5- October 31, 11 AM- 3 PM, Thursday- Saturday.

Old Schools of Sebastian County

With last week's parent-teacher conferences, we are reminded of the old schools of Sebastian County. The Sebastian County website at Rootsweb has a wonderful collection of photos and information. You can see more at the Old Jail Museum's Redwine Pioneer Schoolhouse. Photos of area schools and pupils line the walls. You'll see the classroom rules and consequences for misbehavior that were posted to make any potential miscreant think twice. The portraits of Lincoln and Washington will remind you of your own school days. A jar of marbles recalls playground fun and the "little house" behind the school makes us thankful for modern conveniences.

The Museum sells two publications about early schools: "When the Old Bell Rang" and the 1998 edition of the Key Magazine. They are available for purchase at the Old Jail Museum.

The 2010 Museum season is drawing to a close at the end of October. Come see us this weekend and enjoy South Sebastian County History and the beautiful weather.

Greenwood...Scenes from the Past

The face of Greenwood has changed over the years. Today's photo shows one of the large homes that graced the city. As the caption says, this was the home of the Benjamin Dawson family. It was believed to be the Methodist parsonage at one time. The Dawsons added the rear portion of the structure. The home was struck by lightning and was razed in 1969.
